Common questions about Acupuncture
What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is part of Traditional Chinese Medicine, a fully functional and complete health care system that has been in use for thousands of years.
Traditional Chinese Medicine benefits the physical body and puts equal attention to the emotional body; acupuncture has been widely studied in its abilities to help both physical and emotional issues.
Acupuncture stimulates the body’s immune system, pain reception and innate healing abilities. Scientifically, it has been proven to release neuropeptides and endorphins to relieve pain without the negative side effects of pain killers and other drugs.
Acupuncture has been proven to effectively address many health issues of body, mind and spirit.
Does it hurt?
Rarely is acupuncture associated with pain. The needles are very thin and solid, and do not cut the skin like a hypodermic needle does. Occasionally there is needle-stick pain but it fades quickly, generally within a second or two.
Does it work?
Acupuncture works!
It is part of a comprehensive medical system in use for thousands of years throughout China, Japan, and Asia. If it didn't work, it wouldn't still be in common use in Asia Europe and increasingly in the United States. Possibly the best known American witness to acupuncture's efficacy was in the 1970's when James Reston, Vice-president of the New York Times, underwent emergency appendectomy in China, using acupuncture as the only anesthesia. Reston was awake and aware throughout the procedure, and upon return to the states, wrote about his experiences.
The U.S. military has likewise been very interested in acupuncture and developed "Battlefield Acupuncture" in the 1990's. Rooted in the technique of Chinese ear acupuncture, BFA has been in use in military situations and in helping U.S. veterans deal with pain, opioid-addiction and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
